Novel selective medium for isolation of Staphylococcus lugdunensis from wound specimens.

چکیده
We compared a novel selective Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SSL) medium with routine media (blood and chocolate agars) for the detection of S. lugdunensis in 990 clinical specimens (from tissue, pus, or wound swabs). Significantly more S. lugdunensis isolates were detected on SSL medium (34/990) than on routine medium (7/990) (P = 0.001, McNemar's test).

Atypical Colony Morphology of Staphylococcus lugdunensis Isolated from a Wound Specimen.
The incidence of infections due to coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) has been steadily increasing in recent years. In this report, we describe an isolate of the CoNS Staphylococcus lugdunensis from a wound specimen with a colony morphology distinct from that of a classical S. lugdunensis colony. Specifically, wrinkled, medium-sized, beta hemolytic, opaque, rough white colonies were detect...
متن کاملVentriculitis due to Staphylococcus lugdunensis: two case reports
INTRODUCTION Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an unusually virulent coagulase-negative staphylococcus that has rarely been implicated in central nervous system infections. CASE PRESENTATION Two children hospitalized in the Neurosurgery Unit developed ventriculitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis following placement of external ventriculostomy drains. The causative orga...
متن کاملFrequency of isolation of Staphylococcus lugdunensis in consecutive urine cultures and relationship to urinary tract infection.
Recent reports associate Staphylococcus lugdunensis with severe infection in humans. The frequency of this microorganism in urine cultures is unknown. Five hundred isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were recovered from 4,652 consecutive urine specimens submitted for culture to the Mayo Clinic Microbiology Laboratory. Thirty-one (6%) of 500 isolates of CoNS were identified as S....
متن کاملThe mPEG-PCL Copolymer for Selective Fermentation of Staphylococcus lugdunensis Against Candida parapsilosis in the Human Microbiome
Many human skin diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis, potentially occur due to the over-growth of fungi. It remains a challenge to develop fungicides with a lower risk of generating resistant fungi and non-specifically killing commensal microbes. Our probiotic approaches using a selective fermentation initiator of skin commensal bacteria, fermentation metabolites or their derivatives provide...
متن کاملStaphylococcus lugdunensis; a pathogen that should be considered in Iran
Background: Staphylococcus lugdunensis is Gram-positive cocci of the staphylococcaceae family. S. lugdunensis despite having a clotting factor (wall coagulase), was classified in the coagulase negative staphylococcus group (CoNS) for lack of free coagulase. Although this bacterium is part of the human normal flora, in terms of virulence, S. lugdunensis is in second place after S. aureus. S. lug...
